Chillin'

A few days ago I was trying a few (billion) new tricks to entertain Jacob. I didn't realize how over the top I had become until I saw these pictures. (Our friend Elizabeth Taylor--real name--sold us the Winnie the Pooh arch for a song!)

Of course, Jacob looks unbelievably non-plussed for all of that gear surrounding him. He really does know how to chill. Here chill is code for inspiring mommy to run around wagging toys in his face, even though now we know that all it takes to make him smile...yes folks he's smiling a bit...is to kiss his tummy after a diaper change when he's well fed.

Ah the power of food and attention. What a smart boy. (:
Hopefully we'll get a picture of him smiling soon for you all! Posted by Picasa

A special thanks to Aunt Jana & Uncle Jon

Last week I felt in the mood to dress Jacob up a bit. I picked this little number that Jana and Jon got him. Pretty cute, huh?

As hopefully you can see, it's a Tigger outfit! Jana has always reminded me of Tigger, and I (unfortunately) have always felt like a mix between Piglet and Pooh. She's got such a lovely, happy energy and makes everything fun. I wring my hands and fret just like Piglet and well, I do love a good treat, like Pooh Bear. Maybe Jana's got a bit of that nervous Piglet energy mixed in with all of her Tigger-ey-ness too...hmmmm...Well, the point is, I thought this choice of an outfit was perfect considering who it was from as well as its cuteness.

However, I saved my favorite part of the outfit for last. Ta da!

I love, love, love, love, love this outfit...and the main reason are these little Tigger pants. Look at those tiny little chicken legs coming out of that rump! He is growing so much and is such a cute little man. Posted by Picasa

Four weeks and beyond

Everyone keeps on saying how very much Matt and Jacob look alike.
I heartily agree. Here's the proof.

Exhibit A: Jacob at 4 weeks

Exhibit B: Matt at 4 weeks

From these pictures we can see things I gave him and things Matt gave him. Ahem,

From his Daddy:

1. Googly eyes (I wonder what Matt was looking at, it must have been sca-ry)
2. Lotsa hair
3. Nose
4. Eyes
5. Interest in things other than cameras
6. "Guns" (brauny arms)
7. "Pistons" (brauny legs)
8. Curled under, bubbly toes

From his Momma:

1. Less hair than his daddy had (I guess my baldness thinned his hair out, check out the mane Matt had!)
2. Maybe his mouth, although I have other pics of Jacob that show a Matt-ey mouth

crickets chirping

And there we have it! But I'm not worried one bit about him not looking much like me, and I'll show you why.

Now that's a handsome man. If having a child not look like me means that we get to perpetuate this wonderfulness, then I'm all for it. Posted by Picasa

It can only end in tears

Jacob's cord fell off last Thursday, as mentioned by Matt, and we bathed him for the first time on Saturday! (Once the funky left over cord stuff was gone.) It started out, as you can see, quite pleasantly. He seemed delighted with the "newborn sling" that held him snugly in the warm water. And he seemed very interested in the baby next to him. We thought we had hit the jackpot with this baby boy. No crying his first bath? Was it to be believed?

No, it wasn't. Once the scrubbing began the pleasantness was going,
going,

gone. Nothing, not even his lil' Rocky outfit could calm him. We love our boy, and hope that after all of the baths we're going to have to give him he'll still love us. Posted by Picasa

Hello, operator?

i just wanted to post this picture b/c i thought it was funny. i was holding him as he fed and i looked down and would swear (if i did that kind of thing) he was trying to pretend i wasn't there by acting like he was on the phone.

anywho, we just wanted to give a report of some of the comings and goings of the house hutchison:

sometime around the middle of the week, robyn and i were kind of wondering what the story was about his belly button, or the large, gross-looking, black thing still attached to it. it seemed like time enough for it "go away". i thought it might be a good idea if we used some wart remover to burn it off or dig it out with a dull spoon, but robyn assured me there were better ways. i succumbed. she called the nurse and as she spoke to the nurse, off it came. so now jacob has a quite funny looking thing where the large, gross-looking, black thing used to be. folks have told us that will soon look normal also. i'm trying to be patient for my son to look more and more like a person.

and b/c his cord fell off, we gave him his first bath. b/c i don't know how to post more than one picture at a time, i'll let robyn tell more about that later and we'll put a few pics on.

we also made it through our first three-hour block of church. after only spending a total of two hours in church over the last three sundays, i thought three hours might be a bit much so soon. but after robyn told me i could bring a snack and take a nap after we got home, i decided to go. jacob, on the other hand, had no qualms. he actually got to sleep through most of it. it seemed like every female i passed in the hall wanted me to stop so they could see the baby. if i wasn't married (to such a lovely bride) i'd probably have gotten a big head.

not that any of you read this blog to find out how the dad is doing, i thought i'd take a minute to tell you how I am doing. i had a job interview on friday with a valuation firm. it looks pretty good. my interview started at 2 in the afternoon and i didn't leave until around 7:30. can you imagine a five and a half hour interview? grueling! not really, it's a small firm and most of the time we were just shooting the bull. the owner of the firm spent 30 mins (of his three hours) trying to convince me of the virtues of owning a saab 9-3. hopefully he plans on paying me enough to own one.

well, so long for now.

Him Toe Tweet

I feel it's kindof a wasted post if we don't post a picture of the boy too. This is from Jacob's first hairwashing. He well understood the concept of keeping his mouth closed to avoid getting soap in it. Smart boy. And (this time) he seemed to really enjoy the experience.

This was from his third mini-bath. He looks a little unsure here, and if I put another picture up of two minutes later you'd think we were torturing him. Unlucky for him his hair is so long at 2 weeks old that he'll have to submit to lots of this hateful treatment.

And here's the finished product. He's got some curls and we're hoping for more. Well, I am anyway.

Matt tells a story about when he was volunteering at a senior citizen's home and a little old lady asked him if his hair was naturally curly. He told her yes and she proceeded to turn to another volunteer and whisper in her loudest, old lady whisper, "it's a shame to see that curly hair wasted on a boy". Matt's curls aren't wasted on me, and Jacob's won't be either.

Also, the title of this post is in loving homage to Beadie, a nurse, who kept on saying this to/about Jacob. She also said "him a sugaboy" quite a bit too. And you know what? She's right.
