Red Cheeked

The weekend before we left for Utah Matt took the boys and me to a pumpkin patch. But oh, it was so much more than that. It was a little moment of perfection. I've been sick this weekend and so the memory of this little trip needs to be documented...to perfection!

It was a cold (and by the looks of my hair windy) day. The weather drove away the faint-hearted so we were the only ones on our tractor ride to the apple picking spot.

The driver of the tractor upon dropping us off gave us suggestions of some yummy varieties and said, with a kindly wink, to just rub them on our shirts and try a few. Between our cold cheeks and the blushing apples it was a red-cheeked day (hence the title).

So we picked.

And we tasted.

We picked some more.

And we tasted.

Mmm mmmm mmmmm.

We appreciated the little signs at the end of the rows indicating the variety. We were intrigued by a sign for some "Honey Crisp" apples but found that those trees were stripped bare. When we bought our apples the clerk told us that the honey crisp apples are pretty much gone the first weekend of the picking season because they're so good. Subsequently Jacob told everyone for a few weeks afterward that "at the apple picking place the honey crisp were all gone" with a look of concern and sincerity. Seriously, what a yummy, cereal-ey sounding name. Has anyone had one?

The boys spent some time working on the farm too.

Those plastic cows needed lots of hay.

The scattered bits of hay in the barn needed raking.

And the fields needed plowing.

Jacob also had a sincere wish to pet every single goat in this pen. He got just about all of them and had to be torn away from the two that remained out of reach.

Matt got the boys lost in the hay bale maze, but Jacob kept his wits about him and found the exit eventually. (Matt was totally crying and freaking out even though I kept saying, "I'm right here!" So dramatic.)

We rode on the "moo choo".

And totally secondary to all of the above activities, to say nothing of the dozen pumpkin and cinnamon doughnuts we bought...there were pumpkins.

I'd like to say a big Bravo for Matt. He took time out of his school schedule to take us on this outing and we're just not outing people, so it was big. Thanks baby.

Robyn - What fun you had! I personally love Gala apples and so I would have spent all my time in that row. I bet the boys just LOVED it!

I hear you on the "not being outing people". All of our outings are initiated by Steve. I love being a home body, especially when it's cold.

WOW!!! I wish there was something like that here...I will never find it here though. They haul in pumpkins to the Station Casino parking lot and call it a pumpkin patch, but I refuse to accept it.

The "moo-choo" looks like fun! I, the mom of the Train fiend would pick that one out eh?

And lastly, as a Horticulture (yes I had to spell it 3 times and am still not confident I did it right) Major I am sad to say that I have never heard of the Honey Crisp Apple. I love Brayburn. When fresh they taste like cider. Gala's are my second fav.

Why yes, I have had a honey crisp. Peapod sent it to us with our order as a free gift. It was sweet like honey. (Is that Mariah Carey I hear in the back of my head?). Anyway, so cute. I love the boys working on the farm. Yay, Matt.

That looked like the funnest outing for sure! Did you say it was in Indiana? My favorite apple would be the fuji, but I'm sure willing to try the Honey Crisp if I find it. Come to think of it it does sound like a great cereal name. :]

Looks like a wonderful day for everyone. I see Matt has his student hairdo. I will be on the lookout for honey crisp! Those boys love to work and show love too. Love to all.

I luv Honey Crisps. Especially when I found them for 88 cents a lbs! Mmmm, they are sweet and crispy. You two look fab in that last photo. all hip and grad-schooley for sure. fall outings and all the trappings that go along with it are the best, and you sure hit the jackpot on this one!

Hey Robin! Remember me? Erin Kroska from good ole' Fernwood? (Well it's Erin Fillmore now). I ran across your blog via Mark Hales's blog. Both you and Matt look wonderful:) Congrats on the darling children--they are beautiful! Hope you are well:)

Ok, just dropping in to tell you that the honeycrisp apple was "genetically engineered" at the U of M and is kind of a pride of Minnesota. They really are that good. My husband went "exclusive" after trying them.

And with my husband being in school too, I can understand what a luxury some of these outings are. Good for you guys.
